Смею предположить, что ни травными своими нюансами, ни анималистичными нигде и никому она не жмет. Shalimar L’Essence (2025) – действительно про праздник, и в какой-то мере, как у нас принято говорить, про праздник живота, так как предлагает аромат круассанов и даже изысканных десертов, с ванилью и шоколадом (зависит от погодных условий и температуры кожи). При этом гурманством новинка не душит: угощения сервированы на свежем воздухе. Может раскрываться оазисом в пустыне или, наоборот, радовать ароматом моря, – так, что вы сразу же вспомните, каким был Шалимар в прошлом. Из ориентиров: мне кажется, ближайшие родственники новинки – Shalimar Legere (2003) (лимончики) и Shalimar Philtre de Parfum (2020) (миндаль). Жасмином же своим версия L’Essence, на мой взгляд, изданные в последние годы “жасминовые” парфюмы компании не повторяет, что и удачно. В ней комфортно спать и ни о чем не беспокоиться – как это было в детстве.

Celebration of life

All autumn, Guerlain lovers celebrated Shalimar’s centenary with Shalimar L’Essence (2025), created for the event – and it’s easy to continue the celebration, as the new perfume is crafted as cutie. I dare say it doesn’t feel too overwhelming, either with its herbal or animalic nuances. Shalimar L’Essence (2025) is truly a celebration, and to some extent, as we say, a feast for the stomach, offering the aroma of croissants and even exquisite desserts, with vanilla and chocolate (depending on the weather and skin temperature). At the same time, gourmandism doesn’t stifle the new perfume: the treats are served in the fresh air. It can unfold like a desert oasis or, conversely, delight with the scent of the sea – so you’ll immediately recall Shalimar’s past. As reference points, I think Shalimar Legere (2003) (lemons) and Shalimar Philtre de Parfum (2020) (almond) are close to the new release. As for L’Essence, in my opinion, its jasmine doesn’t replicate the company’s “jasmine” perfumes released in recent years, which is fortunate. It’s comfortable to sleep in and be worry free – just like when you were a child.

И вот сегодняшняя героиня моя – Rose de Petra (2013) by Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777.

On a day when you can hardly breathe from the heat and don’t want to go anywhere, you learn not only how to cope with such a condition, but also how to decorate your life with something suitable, which you don’t turn to on other days. What used to please you in the summer months and was created for such occasions. And you remember the scents of the East. Perfume works that require heat and hot skin. If you are ready to watch how the heat exhausts the usually rigid structure of the composition and tame this or that stubborn person. Or, on the contrary, something that did not give itself away, finally will spread its wings. And here is my heroine today – Rose de Petra (2013) by Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777.

Not only is the perfume addressed to such languid situations – it seems to me that the doctor would also prescribe it to those who are yearning for travel. The ancient city of Petra in Jordan – isn’t it a dream to visit this place after all? With difficulty, but get there (say, via Egypt), listen to the guide on the way, breathe in the local air and approach the gates of wondrous beauty carved out of the rock. Selecting words to describe the shade of the stone and express emotions from contact with the legend.

Rose de Petra also absorbed the riches of the East. Pomegranate juice and lychee enhance and beautify its delicate floral heart. In winter, this juice will not flow so abundantly into your glass. And the rose will be lonely and cold. But now you can literally drink it, marveling at the combination of sweetness and tartness. And the spices (pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and cumin) seem to emphasize its fruity and berry character even more. Then your nose picks up the white dust of vanilla, which was present in the materials of those years, and rejoices in recognition. Together with light intelligent patchouli, this white dust serves as a connecting link between the joyful, bright beginning of the story and its dark, mysterious end. However, light, silky and yet dusty vetiver keeps them company and reminds of the desert.

С Shalimar Millésime Jasmin (2024) by Guerlain знакомлюсь под настроение и делать выводы не тороплюсь. Но что здесь кажется удачным безоговорочно – это огромные белые колокольчики с пронзительным духом жасмина Grandiflorum. Свежий “зеленый” аромат с легким банановым оттенком, которым можно восхищаться не уставая в течение многих часов. Among the flowers

I didn’t want to rush the meeting with Shalimar Millésime Jasmin (2024) by Guerlain and even more – to jump to conclusions. But what seems here to be successful unconditionally is the huge white bells with the piercing spirit of Grandiflorum jasmine. A fresh “green” scent with a light banana hue that you can admire tirelessly for many hours. Unlike its equally hard-to-find (and also terribly expensive) brother from the boutique Guerlain’s collection Jasmin Grandiflorum Extrait 30 (2023), the riot of jasmine here is shaded by the tenderness of ylang, borrowed as if from the very original Liu (1929) by Guerlain, and its more tropical version from Terracotta Voile d’Été (1999) by Jean-Paul Guerlain и Mathilde Laurent. But, of course, the flowers are not the only characters in the story.

Being the highlight of the Shalimar base that the company’s perfumers have been showing us in the Millésime editions of recent years, they are also surrounded by those pink and even cranberry shades of light that can be seen in the reissued L’Initial (2021) by Thierry Wasser. Shining light and a contrasting tarry scent of abstract leather/suede, serving as a kind of bridge between “heaven” and “earth”, as well as between the past and the future. Suede, satin and a basket with jasmine petals, decorated with flashbacks of Liu – this is the picture Shalimar Millésime Jasmin drew today.

Or des Indes (1988) by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier и Habit Rouge Parfum (2024) by Guerlain. Несмотря на красный цвет картонок образцов, ароматы по ощущению не красные. Удивительно, но бессознательно, обратившись к довольно большему и разнообразному ассортименту согревающей гурманики, выбрала как-то один за другим именно этих красавцев. А похожи они только тем, что оба – про странствия: в одном – рассказ о разбойниках и подготовке к путешествиям (запасаются печеньем, табаком и ромом), а в другом – о пребывании на дальнем острове и раскуривании ладана. Habit Rouge Parfum раскрывает современный вариант кожи, дегтя, дыма, специй и красивой не кондитерской ванили, и аромат печенья позже начинает здорово работать на плоскость “дальней земли”, горячего песка, над которым клубится пар, – примерно как в Oud Extrait (2018) by MFK, о котором писала ранее. Амбра же принимает участие в образах давно не принимавших душ странников и их видавших виды одежд. Тогда как Or des Indes показывает красивый закат, великолепные пейзажы в мягком свете и совершенно беспардонный, черноночной жасмин. Ладан в нем – и тот цветочный.

Оба парфюма, из 1988 и 2024 – актуальны и увлекательны.

In the islands

Or des Indes (1988) by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier and Habit Rouge Parfum (2024) by Guerlain. Despite the red color of the sample boxes, the fragrances have not been felt red. However, there is a common component in their compositions, and this is geranium. Surprisingly, but unconsciously, having turned to a fairly large and varied assortment of warming gourmands, I somehow chose these beauties one after another. And they are similar only in that both are about journeys: one is a story about robbers and preparation for travel (stocking up on cookies, tobacco and rum), another is about being on a distant island and burning incense. Habit Rouge Parfum reveals a modern version of leather, tar, smoke, spices and beautiful non-confectionery vanilla, and later the scent of cookies begins to create an image of the “distant land” and hot sand, over which steam is blowing – much like in Oud Extrait de Parfum (2018) by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, which I wrote about earlier. Ambergris takes part in the images of travelers who have not showered for a long time and their shabby clothes. While Or des Indes shows a beautiful sunset, magnificent landscapes in soft light and completely shameless, black-night jasmine. Incense in it is also floral friendly.

Both perfumes, from 1988 and 2024, are relevant and exciting.

Khôl de Bahreïn is a viscous, penetrating amber with flirtatious bows and hints of lollipops and gems. If it’s windy and rainy – or something else makes you feel uncomfortable, make your eyes smoky and meet the shadows coming.

Suede Rose Cannelle by La Closerie des Parfums связалась у меня с образом богатства, возможно, потому, что пришла накануне желаемого путешествия и скрасила дорогу туда. Плюс, была информация о том, что парфюм создавала Далия Изем (я бы выбрала ее для этого проекта только из-за фамилии) из дубайского отделения Givaudan, и роза эта ожидалась пышной, пряной и гурманской. Собственно, она такая и есть: сливовая и черносливовая, с каплей меда и корицей, посаженная на сухую ворсистую и слегка замшевую базу. Вспоминаются праздничные конфеты из детства “чернослив в шоколаде”, крымский херес и беседки, увитые южным жасмином. Парфюм стойкий и не теряет направленность на красивую трапезу очень и очень долго, причем праздник жизни совершается в каких-то открытых пространствах, куда воздух доносит запахи трав и животных.

In the rich man’s world

Suede Rose Cannelle by La Closerie des Parfums contacted me with the image of wealth, perhaps because it came on the eve of the desired trip and brightened the way there. Plus, there was information that the perfume was made by Dalia Izem (her last name sounds almost like raisins in Russian) from the Dubai branch of Givaudan, and this rose was expected to be lush, spicy and gourmet. Actually, it is like that: plum and prune, with a drop of honey and cinnamon, planted on a dry, fleecy and slightly suede base. I recall childhood festive sweets “prunes in chocolate”, Crimean sherry and gazebos whipped by the southern jasmine. The perfume does not lose focus on a beautiful meal for a very, very long time, and the holiday of life takes place in some open spaces, where the air carries the smells of herbs and animals.

Новая серия Parfums MDCI Painters and perfumers напоминает о прекрасных картинах классиков достойными современными парфюмами, и сегодня хочется написать о работе Натали Фейстауэр Cuir Cavalier. Изящный цветочный кожаный и удовый аромат передает цвета, настроение и детали портрета кисти Теодора Жерико «Офицер конных егерей императорской гвардии, идущий в атаку». Мандарин и теплая роза уравновешиваются шафраном с аккуратной металлической нотой (клинок), а также слегка специевой кожей (сбруя). С хорошим раскрытием легко представить эффектные алые лепестки, ягоды клюквы, калины или даже кровь, хотя парфюм рассказывает, скорее, о жизни, силе и здоровье. И чуть позже можно почувствовать саму лошадку – маслянистый, с каплей дегтя и “пороха” аромат уда.

Cuir Cavalier – пышный и бархатный, как уютный коврик или диван в музее. И если вам полюбился Mon Seul Désir, созданный Стефани Бакуш для Jul et Mad, тоже, кстати, как ольфакторная иллюстрация знаменитой картины (“Дама с единорогом”), – стоит попробовать и Cuir Cavalier, как мультигендерную мягкую специевую кожу с мандарином, цветами и удом.

Blood, flowers and grass

Decent modern perfumes from the new series of Parfums MDCI Painters and perfumers remind us of beautiful classical paintings, and today I’d like to write about Nathalie Feisthauer’ work Cuir Cavalier. Elegant floral leather and oud fragrance conveys the colors, mood and details of the portrait by Théodore Géricault “An Officer of the Imperial Horse Guards Charging”. Tangerine and warm rose are balanced by saffron with a neat metallic note (blade), as well as by slightly spicy leather (bridle). With a good opening, it is easy to imagine spectacular scarlet petals, cranberries or even drops of blood, although the perfume tells more about life, strength and health. And a little later you can feel the horse itself – oily, with a hint of tar and “gunpowder” oud scent.

Cuir Cavalier is lush and velvet, like a cozy rug or sofa at the museum. And if you fell in love with Mon Seul Désir, created by Stephanie Bakouche for Jul et Mad, which, by the way, was also inspired by the work of art (“The Lady and the Unicorn”), it’s worth trying Cuir Cavalier, as multi-gender soft leather scent with flowers, tangerine and oud.

Для меня эти парфюмы роднит не только авторство Жан-Мишеля Дюрье и красавица-роза, но и общее “отпускное” впечатление, хотя новинка Дюрье гораздо более мультигендерная. Древесина, на которой появляются цветы и фрукты, всё-таки специевая, ладанная и собранная с намеком на удовое дерево. Есть тут какой-то отсыл к пиратской, разбойничьей теме, а также к темному времени суток и замшевым деталям. Ну и ощутимый металлический аккорд шафрана и мускуса делает W/oud rose мощным ольфакторным оружием.

An excuse for a party

The latest fragrance from Jean-Michel Duriez W/oud rose may seem a little bigger than the usual city apartment can accommodate, but it will certainly be good in some other contexts. I would say that the perfume was created for parties and discos in the south, places where we go for new vivid emotions.

The fragrance is made up of simple but beloved things: roses and pears, roses and raspberries, roses and grape marshmallow. With saffron dust, on wooden islands, with soulful splashes of iris. The rose itself is delicate, slightly fruity and gourmet, and those who loved and wore Enjoy by Jean Patou may take a closer look if W/oud rose will replace (or complement) it in some sense. For me, these perfumes are not only related by the authorship of Jean-Michel Duriez and the beautiful rose, but also by the general “holiday” impression, although Duriez’ novelty is much more multi-gender. The wood on which the flowers and fruits appear is still spicy, incense and collected with a hint of an oud wood. There is some reference to the pirate, bandit theme here, as well as to the dark time of the day and suede details. And furthermore, the sizeable metal accord of saffron and musk makes W/oud rose a powerful olfactory weapon.

Это красивейший цветочный аромат, отсылающий сразу к двум легендарным парфюмам дома Guerlain – Samsara и Mitsouko. И если до 2010 года могло казаться, что, имея на полке раритеты, творение Франсиса Кюркджяна не является обязательным, – с каждым последующим годом чувствуется, насколько Promesse de l’Aube отдельный, самостоятельный и ценный, особенно для любителей изящно воссозданных цветов.

Меня всегда восхищали крупные цветки жасмина и кремовый иланг, которые щедро отдает парфюм, что бы ни случилось. Раскрытие Promesse de l’Aube может быть персиково-мицуковым, или, скорее, в сторону сандаловой деревяшки Самсары, но цветы и тонка с ванилью держат свою линию, удивляя, восхищая, создавая расслабляющую атмосферу. База парфюма – пушистое облако, нечто абстрактно-сказочное, с воспоминанием о жасминовых лепестках в глиняной посуде.

Что касается одноименного произведения Ромена Гари, мне кажется, имеет смысл знакомиться с ними вместе, или посмотреть, надушившись парфюмом, снятый на основе книги фильм. Франсис Кюркджян передал то светлое чувство, которое испытал главный герой, увидев Средиземное море.

И все эти прекрасные цветы, и почти съедобный крем, и персики – все это могло греть душу героя, когда он представлял, как оправдает наконец ожидания матери, сделает то, о чем она много лет мечтала. И так сквозь череду лишений, неудач и неуравновешенности одинокой женщины, переложившей на плечи ребенка обязанность спасти весь мир, на передний план выходят оптимизм и красота жизни, какой она есть.

Cream of the Crop

Promesse de l’Aube by Parfums MDCI was created 14 years ago and now we’re naturally taking it as the classic perfume. This is a beautiful floral fragrance, which reminds us of two legendary perfumes by Guerlain – Samsara and Mitsouko. And if until 2010 it might seem that, having rarities on the shelf, the creation of Francis Kurkdjian is not necessarily, with each passing year it became clearer, how much Promesse de l’Aube is individual, separate and precious, especially for lovers of elegantly recreated flowers.

I have always admired vivid jasmine flowers and cream ylang, which perfume generously gives away, no matter what happens. The disclosure of Promesse de l’Aube may be peach-mitsouko, or rather towards the sandalwood of Samsara, but the flowers, tonka bean and vanilla keep their line, surprising, delighting and creating a relaxing atmosphere. The base of the perfume is a fluffy cloud, something fabulous, with a memory of jasmine petals in earthenware jug.

As for the eponymous book by Romain Gary, it seems to me that it makes sense to get to know them together, or to perfume ourself while watching a film made on the basis of the book. Francis Kurkdjian conveyed the bright feeling that the novel’s hero experienced when he saw the Mediterranean Sea.

“I was sleeping peacefully in my compartment when I felt upon my face something like a friendly hand. I woke up and found that it was only a breath of cool and scented air. The train had just stopped at Alassio, and my mother had lowered the window. I propped myself up on my elbows and my mother smiled as she followed the direction of my eyes. I took one glance at the world outside and suddenly, with absolute and final certitude, I knew that I had arrived. I saw a blue sea, a beach of pebbles and fishing boats drawn up on their sides. A few palms. Something peculiar — I am unable to tell what it was — happened to me at that moment, in a flash; all I know is that it was a flash of happiness. I had a feeling of infinite peace — I had come back home, at last”.

And all these beautiful flowers, and almost edible cream, and peaches – all this could warm up the hero’s soul when he imagined how he would finally meet his mother’s expectations, do what she had dreamed about for many years. And thus, from one defeat to another, despite emotional instability of a single woman, who has shifted the responsibility to save the world onto the shoulders of her child, optimism and the beauty of life as it is have come to the fore.

В Украине наконец продаются духи Ani, изданные в серии No boundaries турецкого бренда Nishane, и я очень рада знакомству. Сесиль Зарокян воссоздала атмосферу знаменитого древнего города на границе Турции и Армении, и результат именно такой, как мы могли бы ожидать от нее. Красивая и запоминающаяся цветочно-ориентальная композиция, игра пряностей, дух шелкового пути из Epic, который она сделала для Amouage десять лет назад, и темные розы с черной смородиной из Fêtes Persanes by Parfums MDCI. Только благодаря концентрации extrait, плотность Ani воспринимается изящнее.

Новинка Nishane будто бы слагает былину о славных событиях прошлого. Косы из амброво-пачулистой, цветочно-пудровой, абстрактно-фруктовой и специевой частей укладывают вокруг нашей головы – и предлагают следить за ходом истории. А она долгая-долгая. Вначале мятежная, к концу – тихая и умиротворяющая. С Ani так и гуляешь по песчаным дорогам старого города, представляя себе женщину, которая там жила, любила, растила сады и детей. И эти едва ощутимые яблоки и курага, а также молоко с ванилью и розовыми лепестками, и даже будто бы манная каша – кажутся незаурядными и прекрасными.

Do we vote for peace?

The perfume Ani, released last year in the No boundaries series of the Turkish brand Nishane, is finally presented in Ukrainе and I am very glad to understand it better. Cécile Zarokian recreated the atmosphere of the famous ancient city on the border of Turkey and Armenia, and the result is exactly the same as we might expect from her. A beautiful and memorable floral-oriental composition, a dance of spices, the spirit of the silk road from Epic, which she made for Amouage ten years ago, and dark roses with black currants from Fêtes Persanes by Parfums MDCI. At the same time, thanks to the concentration of extrait, the density of Ani is taken more elegantly.

Nishane’ novelty seems to compose the epic story about the glorious events of the past. Braids from ambergris-patchouli, floral-powdery, abstract-fruity and spice parts are laid around our heads – and offer to follow the course of history. And this story is long, rebellious in the beginning, and quiet and peaceful towards the end. With Ani, you walk along the sandy roads of the old city, imagining a woman who lived there, loved, raised gardens and children. And these barely visible apples and dried apricots, as well as milk with vanilla and rose petals, and even if semolina pudding was here, look infinitely beautiful as life itself.
