Floral Kaleidoscope

Upon first impression, Rose Blanche & Gardénia (2021) by Carlotha Ray transports you into the atmosphere of a flower shop. It opens with that characteristically cool, damp air, the scent of freshly cut stems, the sweetness of rosebuds, and the buttery richness of gardenia with its velvety dark-green leaves. A sharp, daring coolness contrasts with a calm, lipsticky texture and a dense, creamy richness. This fragrance will only captivate you if you truly love flowers — after all, it is fascinating to observe how master perfumer Jean-Michel Duriez has recreated them.

He wove them meticulously, without theatricality. A pink, almost crimson rose wrapped in a musky mist briefly appears white before reclaiming its pink hue and taking on an apricot scent. The creamy gardenia hints at faint, subtle nuances of cheese. The surrounding greenery holds its ground without stealing the spotlight. Soon, however, the flower shop gives way to a greenhouse as the “botanical leather” accord — the signature element running through the entire Carlotha Ray fragrance line — comes into play. At this stage, the perfume warms up and becomes more tropical, filled with the damp breath of earth, moss, and decaying leaves. Through the greenery emerges the apricot-suede sweetness of osmanthus, complementing the fruity tone of the rose. The fragrance plays with its shifting colorful facets while keeping the title flowers firmly in focus.

Летом, при беглом знакомстве, на ум пришел традиционный и любимый многими ольфакторный профиль согревающей амбры-смолы, ярким представителем которого является Hermessence Ambre Narguile (2004) by Hermès. Но нет, янтарная амбра в Myrrhe & Bois Brûlés лишь одна из составляющих.

Главный акцент парфюма Carlotha Ray, мирра – также смола, но с прохладой. И картина рисуется милыми голубыми красками, немного напоминая начало Chamarre (2009) by Mona di Orio. В то же время, ничего откровенно брутального здесь нет, вместо “пива” легко представить, к примеру, крем-соду. И когда мысленно хочется закрыть книгу и остановиться на трэвл-формате этой модной и очень современной работы Жан-Мишеля Дюрье, парфюм открывает необыкновенную, нежную и уже лишенную андрогинности красоту, – не совсем даже понятно, какими ходами и компонентами исполненную. Пока что хочется предположить действие иланга и османтуса, именно они, дескать, все смягчили и перевели в мультигердерное русло, но это лишь предположение, так как цветок вернулся все же фантазийный, еще более раскрытый и по-настоящему радующий.

Но что еще более удивительно, нанеся на запястье каплю эфирного масла мирры из Сомали, я поняла, что вся композиция по сути и воссоздает ее образ.

An amber glow fills the room

The Fragrance foundation 2024 awards winner Myrrhe & Bois Brûlés by Carlotha Ray was conceived as a symbol of home warmth and coziness during the cold winter – and it seems that it is most attractive to be felt and revealed in the cold. In the summer, upon a quick acquaintance, the traditional and beloved by many olfactory profile of warming amber-resin came to mind, a bright representative of which is Hermessence Ambre Narguile (2004) by Hermès. But no, in Myrrhe & Bois Brûlés amber is only part of the story.

The main accent of the Carlotha Ray’s perfume, myrrh – is also a resin, but with coolness. And the picture is painted with cute blue colors, a little reminiscent of the beginning of Chamarre (2009) by Mona di Orio. However, very soon spices and sweets are added to them (the scent of apple pie, not just resin-amber, inspires to try again Ambre Narguile from the exclusive Hermès line), and then the balance of warm and cold temperatures will not shift too much in one direction or another.

Myrrhe & Bois Brûlés gives the feeling of a big fantasy flower, which gracefully decorates what is essentially a fougere base of the perfume, so that in the first hours it seems that it is addressed primarily to aesthetic gentlemen. The aroma of beer and foam on it, which appears in the heart “notes”, works on this idea, too. At the same time, there is nothing frankly brutal here; instead of “beer” it is easy to imagine, for example, cream soda. And when you want to close the book and stop at the travel format of this trendy and very modern work by Jean-Michel Duriez, the perfume reveals an extraordinary, gentle and already devoid of androgyny beauty – not even clear how it was executed. For now, let’s think about the effect of ylang-ylang and osmanthus, say they are the ones who softened everything and transferred it to a multi-gender channel, but that’s only a guess, since the flower returned all the same fantasy, even more open and truly pleasing.

But what is even more surprising, having applied to my wrist a drop of myrrh essential oil from Somalia, I realized that in fact the whole composition recreates this marvelous natural resin.
